Computer mapping technology, known as GIS (geographical information system), enables a more sophisticated method of tracking and viewing protected lands, and other environmental data, in New Hampshire. It is now easy to create customizable maps of conservation lands with only a few clicks of a mouse. The resources below provide public access to this technology so you can view protected lands in your community, throughout the state, or in other regions of New England.
Forest Society's GIS services program
Our GIS (geographic information system) services program was launched over the summer of 2000. The goal is to provide local and regional land trusts, conservation commissions and related organizations access to the most current GIS mapping and analysis so that they can be as effective and strategic as possible in protecting the state's most important natural lands.
GRANIT Data Mapper
This GIS tool provides public access to information about the state's protected land, water resources, and transportation network. With the viewer, you can survey protected areas, query for specific parcels based on location and print or save the maps you create.
The New Hampshire Geographically Referenced Analysis and Information Transfer System (NH GRANIT) is a cooperative project to create, maintain and make available a statewide geographic database serving the information needs of state, regional and local decision-makers. A collaborative effort between the University of New Hampshire and the Office of State Planning, the core GRANIT System is housed at the UNH Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans and Space in Durham.
New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services
The OneStop Web Geographic Information System provides access to GIS data developed by NH DES and other state and federal government agencies under the auspices of NH GRANIT. Some of the data on this site include conservation lands, local resource protection priorities, watersheds, pesticide application areas, hazardous waste generators, and more.
Appalachian Mountain Club's interactive mapping service
The Appalachian Mountain Club utilizes GIS technology to gather and analyze information on the Northern Forest, the Central Appalachian region and other areas. The interactive mapping service is an educational resource to help you learn about the important natural landscapes of the Appalachian region and the conservation challenges and opportunities that face them.
