Ongoing Projects
Forest Society research projects include:
  • "New Hampshire's Changing Landscape 2005" - An update of the 1999 analysis of changes in population growth, development and land use and the impacts on natural resource values.

    Executive Summary (2nd Edition):

Supporting documentation (updated April 14, 2005):

Also available: the 1999 summary (93 KB) and the 1999 full report (9.72 MB .zip).

  • Conservation lands mapping - Coordination and mapping of permanently protected conservation lands (public and private) for GRANIT, the state's GIS. (1993-ongoing)

  • Forests forever - A study of conservation easement use in protecting working forestland and the development of model forestry conservation easements. (1994-1995)

  • Bio-timber inventory - Development of a method to inventory plants, timber, habitat, cultural, soils and features on Forest Society properties as a basis for management planning. (1994-ongoing)

  • Water supply land protection project
    • Development of model conservation easements for the protection of public drinking water supplies. View the report (272 KB). (1996-1997)
    • Research on the status of, and threats to, water supply lands in New Hampshire, and recommendations for publicly funded acquisition program for water suppliers. View the report (569 KB). (1997-1998)
    • Support of legislative initiative to create acquisition program. (1998-2000)
    • Development of a landowner and municipal outreach program. (1999-2000)

  • "New Hampshire's Changing Landscape" project - Analysis of changes in population growth, development and land use and the impacts on natural resource values. View the summary (93 KB) or download the full report (9.72 MB .zip). (1998-1999)

  • "The Economic Impact of Open Space in New Hampshire" - Economic analysis of income, jobs and tax revenue associated with forestry, agriculture, outdoor tourism and recreation, and second homes. (1998)

  • Linking lands - GIS utilization to analyze and map land protection priorities around key Forest Society reservations. (1998-ongoing)

  • Critical forest land base - Study of forest fragmentation and its impact on the economics of forest management. (1999-2000)

  • Economics of ecosystem-based forest management - Economic analysis of four management regimes on selected Forest Society lands, based on bio-timber inventory data and the use of an economic model to grow and harvest forests for 150 years under clear-cut, selective cut, ecosystem-based cut, and long-rotation cuts. (2000-2002)

  • "New Hampshire Everlasting" - Statewide GIS analysis and statistical background for the initial scope of New Hampshire Everlasting and subsequent framing of the five major goals: conserving community lands, working forests, habitat, drinking water, and productive agricultural lands. (2001-ongoing)

  • Strategic conservation plan for southeast New Hampshire - A regional GIS mapping and analysis project to identify and rank those lands with the highest conservation values for potential Forest Society reservations, using natural resource data keyed to New Hampshire Everlasting goals. A secondary benefit of the study is to increase the capacity of communities and local land trusts in the region through strategic, partnered projects and technology transfer. (2002-ongoing)

  • "New Hampshire's Vanishing Forests" (7.3 MB .pdf) (2001)

  • GIS service providers profile - In partnership with the New Hampshire GIS Conservation Collaborative, a survey of GIS service providers to obtain profile data for an Internet-based, statewide directory of consulting services available to communities and local land trusts in support of conservation planning. (2003-ongoing)

  • "White Mountain National Forest Plan" revision - GIS modeling of forest stands and ecological land units on the WMNF to identify most verses least productive stands to help balance proposed roadless and wilderness area expansions. (2003-2004)

  • Quabbin to Cardigan strategic conservation plan (Q2C) - The Quabbin to Cardigan Conservation Collaborative is a multi-year private/public effort to establish a contiguous conservation corridor from the southern White Mountains in New Hampshire to the Quabbin Reservation in Massachusetts. The Forest Society's research team is working with partner organizations in the use of GIS data to target critical land protection areas. (2003-2004)
